In the FAQ, you say that the old database format will be discontinued
at the end of 2003, is this really the case ? We'd really like to
continue using it if we can.

The old databases will be available for some time yet.

Thanks, might be worth changing the FAQ ?

Is there an easy way to convert the new database format to the old database format, so that we can continue to use it ?

sigtool --unpack file.cvd

We should use this - thanks.

Remember that on daily basis we only update the daily.cvd database which
is very small. Our mirrors successfuly handle thousands of updates per
day so your customers may download the databases directly from
database.clamav.net.

Yes, but when you roll that daily into the main database, everybody has to do a full download. This is expensive. With "rsync" you only ever download diffs, and even those are LZ compressed. At the end of the day this is the way the commercial AV vendors do things and is much more scalable.

With "rsync" a null update - i.e. check that nothing has change in "viruses.db" or "viruses.db2" costs 386 bytes in a single TCP connection - not bad eh ?

Here's my list of hourly updates for the 6th & 7th :-

If you prefer your own mirror it SHOULD check the digital signatures
because the number of our mirrors is still growing and digital
signatures is the only way to guarantee database security.

This is true and you are right, we should. I will look into using this to update our server, but because our users use a secure login they shouldn't need the signature, so long as we are ensure the mirror is correct.

Because our customers pay us extra for the Virus, Spam and Porn filtering (for e-mail and web), we felt it only fair that we should pay for the bandwidth that provides them with updates. Note, the charge includes support and a (commercial) web management interface, not just the service itself.
