Well I wasn't entirely correct when I said using ltmain.sh from  
gmp-4.1.4 solved all of the shared library and build issues.

Using the one from gmp-4.1.4 still has a problem on some FreeBSD and  
Darwin boxes but the one from libxml2-2.6.17 seems to work properly  
on all of the systems I have tried it on so far.

Any chance of updating to the version included with libxml2-2.6.17???
