Yes, if a new database is installed, then you should see something like this:
SelfCheck: Database modification detected. Forcing reload.
SelfCheck: Integrity OK

P.s.: I don't know if there is a way to tell clamd explicitly that a new virus database is installed and it should reload it...

As long as it rechecks the database on a regular interval... that is all I really care about.
