It's software bugs (as long as you don't run it on defective hardware - make sure your system is stable in other aspects).

Make sure you run the latest code (from sourceforge.net's CVS repository or the nightly tarball) - there were major stability changes since the 0.60 release. If you want to help making clamav more stable, cofigure/compile it with the --enable-debug switch, and report crashes here; at best with a gdb backtrace and the message/condition which made clamav crash.

If you can't / won't use development code, Tomasz wrote today that he expects a new release in september.
