I've tested it against my collection of 345 Word and 58 Excel macro virus sample
documents without any problems.

At this point I'm really just interested in samples of documents that fail in
some way or that have non-default block sizes.

Yes, have already had a quick look at these. I find the OO C++ coding style hard
to penetrate but have started to trace through their source code looking for the
relevant information. Will just have to see how I progress.
