When I uncomment the NotifyClamd option I get the following error.

ERROR: Clamd was NOT notified: Can't connect to clamd through /var/spool/MIMEDefang/clamd.sock
ls -la /var/spool/MIMEDefang/clamd.sock gives
srwxrwxrwx 1 defang defang 0 Apr 22 09:04 /var/spool/MIMEDefang/clamd.sock
Any clues as to the problem?

clamdscan sends the file to clamd to scan. You need to tell clamd to reload the database when it is updated. See the NotifyClamd option in the freshclam.conf and the SelfCheck option in clamav.conf
