Then why in the world should I upgrade if I will be having same problems?
I had trouble with monit when I tried with it. I got mails (alert) every
other minute even when clamd was running properly.

I had something like,
set daemon 120
set alert shantanu
[...]
check process clamd
with pidfile "/var/run/clamd.pid"
start program "/usr/local/sbin/clamd"
