FYI: This problem has existed since somewhere between clamd-0.70-rc and clamd-0.70 (stable). I'm working around it by running a UNIX socket check via monit every 30 seconds or so. clamd hangs between 5 and 8 times a day at this point. The number of hangs seems to be proportional to load.
