The purpose of Anti-Virus without cleaning is to detect files which contain
viruses so you can delete them (either on your machine, or on a gateway
system of some sort such as a mail server).
"Cleaning" viruses out of files is almost 100% pointless these days, because
once you've cleaned the virus out of the file, there's nothing left.
Gone are the days when viruses attached themselves to useful files (such as
MS-Dos executables), and could be removed again, restoring the original file.
Besides, if you found a file with a virus in it, and you cleaned the viral
part out, how much would you trust the integrity of what remained? Far
better to request an uninfected original copy from wherever the file came.
