Not quite as simple as you make out. How do you generalize this as part
of a third-party package then? Does "--sigtool --info=daily.cvd" default
to "knowing" where the default dir is? 

No it doesn't. 

How about adding support for the "pattern file" values to "clamscan -V"
- like most AV vendors do?

e.g.

clamscan  -V

returns

clamscan / ClamAV version 0.73/365/19-06-2004-22:58

for version 365 built on 19-Jun-2004, etc.

ClamAV is in a much better position to figure this stuff out
automatically. RPM builds, etc can/do move the directories involved all
over the place - making "automagic" calls difficult.
