ScanMail is not the only way to scan mail virus. Sure, clamav-milter relies on it, but there are
other ways to use clamav without ScanMail option on.


Using external unpacker (like exim+exiscan) with it is a good example.

I have to agree with "partially for lack of anything else to respect." So what if sometimes clamd eats up tons of memory or hangs? No other OpenSource anti virus with well-maintained virus database exists out there, is there :)
