By "silently" aborting is the kernel not reporting an exit reason? (check dmesg)
well, lo and behold, i happened to log into my serial console server to do some other tasks, and found the following sitting on the server's console. this is a tiny excerpt, and none of this corresponds to an actual silent abort. this morning at 07:59am i had to restart clamd because it had stopped responding, but it's been running fine the rest of the day today (it's been running fine most of the weekend, as the load/volume of mail is a tiny fraction of weekdays).
