Just download the new source, compile it, and install it (make install). As long as you install the newer version in the same place, all the binaries and libaries will overwrite all the old, existing stuff...

For a number of reasons you should not depend upon the installation process to over-write your old files. This problem is not specific to ClamAV (it is a problem with ClamAV though). It is just a very good best practice to manage your installations yourself. Or at least install then verify. In Solaris, echo $PATH, ldd, and crle are your friends.
