I am running Fedora Core 3 and Clamav (via an rpm). Coming from windows into
Linux to learn I have some real stupid questions:

I have gone into the running processes (I guess the services?) and see
clamav there running along with freshclam, do I do anything else to keep it
running? I have edited the freshclam config file to update every 2 hours

If it is already configured to start/stop with the machine, then you have not much else to do.

See if there are log files, like /var/log/clamd.log and freshclam.log. They are only used if the configuration says so, but if you have them then you can see a little of what's going on, for instance freshclam will report each time it checks the virus database.

How do I run a scan that only displays virus infected files? It reckons I
have 5

Scan files on the file system? use "clamscan -ri <some-directory>" on a terminal window. For instance to scan your /tmp directory its clamscan -ri /tmp .

Last question, I am running extremail, I do not understand how to configure
clamav for smtp servers, I have read the manual but I keep getting confused

I don't know anything about extremail, and from their web site it doesn't look like it can be easily used with clamav, it doesn't have filters or a way to set up external processing software.

So, if I am correct, your choice is to use clamav with an additional tool in front of extremail. There's a list of 3rd party tools at http://www.clamav.net/3rdparty.html , look at ClamSMTP, DSpamPD, Sagator, and maybe others. You probably want to use one that comes in rpm form.

Hope this helps.
