We're running clamav in the clamav-milter only configuration - is
there an equvalent script to clamdwatch out there for the straight

Yes, I wrote clmilter_watch for just that purpose:

Hm, or maybe we should switch back to using clamd? I switched to the
milter several versions back because we were getting bit by the
clamd-hanging bug, which maybe is fixed by now? We're running 0.83 on
Solaris with sendmail but I plan to upgrade to 0.85.1 tonight (we're
just ending a month-long systems freeze , no updating system software
during finals period)

Unless you need to do load-balancing to multiple scanning servers, my recommendation is to stick with the milter-only configuration. It's simpler, which is always a good thing.
