Does Exchange 2000 still accept mail for non-existent users, as it does for
5.5? That right there was reason enough for us to put a proxy mail server in
place in the first place. The spam would get sent to a million addresses,
then the exchange server would accept the entire message before generating a
NDR. It was killing our server, when a sane mailserver ( I use Xmail) drops
it after the rcpt command. The bandwidth savings on the spam and virus
mailings alone were reason enough to do this, not to mention cutting the
server load in half and saving us an upgrade cycle.
