The problem I've seen is that some people use various sources for rpm
packages and a consequence of that is that brand A rpm may or may not
overlay brand B rpm packages. They may even install in different
directories (/usr/local/ vs /usr, for example). The make uninstall from
0.87 (and earlier versions) will not uninstall components from rpms nor
even earlier versions of Clamav which is why I mention the man page for
clamav.conf. And in fact it is not predictable if a particular user has
used the --prefix option in the same way between versions.

With all this debris laying around including even multiple executables,
and not knowing the PATH var of the users, we see on this list the
negative consequences of overlapped installations frequently. It is in my
opinion, (learned over the last 40 years of working with computers), that
a clean slate is a great place to work and play with new installations. I
used to program computers with jumper wires - I always pulled every wire
before starting a new project. Not much has changed since the Beatles were
the new guys from Liverpool.

Could be good if ClamAV used something like pkg-config perhaps ? Correct me if I'm wrong... It could help with the cleaning up issue by looking at what files and folder have been created by past installs and what files not to delete if they have been over written by a newer version that you may infact need...
