Everything checked out... Since my original post, I've put ClamXav on a OS X 10.3.9 (non-server) box, installing ClamAV 0.88 along the way, and all is well.

Can't figure out the server thing. It must be something subtle. Does the Mac OS X Server only include ClamAV for purposes of e-mail integration? Perhaps I'm not supposed to be using it as a command-line/shell script tool in this configuration.
