I just today tried to upgrade to 0.88.1, but I am having a problem. I
can configure, make, and make install fine and I am able to start clamd
fine using the config files from 0.88, but when I start up scanning with
milter-greylist I get "Could not connect to clamd daemon at
/defangspool/clamd.sock". If shutdown clamd/sendmail and make install
from the 0.88 directory everything runs fine. Is anyone else
experiencing similar problems?

When running 0.88.1, who owns the socket file and what are the
permissions? There was an earlier problem where starting ClamAV as root
would create a socket that only root could use. It may be back.
Other generally useful stuff to think about:
- Remove the socket file when stopping clam
- Remove the socket file when upgrading clam
- Verify the new version is using the same socket path as the old version
- Don't forget to stop the running instance of the old version
- Be sure you removed all the components of the old version
- Verify the new config files are reviewed for unexpected new features
or discontinued old features.
- If there is a correct starting order for your av tools, use it
