I've looked over the source code and after 30 minutes or so of trying to
identify which files are relevant to the problem, I'm not any closer to
figuring it out. 

Could you point me at the files which are used, source code, or data to
test clamav so that it will detect an virus and report it?

Making sure that works and that I handle it properly is the last task on
my plate to implement this service. I'd really like to get it done
today.

There are some test files in the source distribution. They are there for
a reason ;-)
