FreeBSD 4.x is no longer supported by the port maintainers (or anyone else, really). Good luck filing a bug against something being broken on 4.x and having them actually do anything about it. portinstall should be able to fetch a package and install it without too much trouble. It's part of the portupgrade management tools. Ever think about updating to 6.x? It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.
