Yep, thanks Dennis, I see now that it is in fact /tmp, at least on my
system.  This was also confirmed via strace, and quite simply from the
output of clamscan itself when using the verbose flag (-v):

clamscan -v -d /var/tmp/rsync/MSRBL-Images.hdb - < /dev/null
Checking /tmp/clamav-5cb3da41e7cedff0c4dec1ce07a87beb
stdin: OK

which I had somehow managed to completely overlook.
