For me it depends on if it is a major release or minor release version
I'm upgrading to. If it's a major release, like from 0.88 to 0.90 I
would install the new major release on a test machine first and read the
mailing lists for a few weeks before trying it on a production machine.
Then if all seems good, I roll it out to one production machine and let
it run for a week or so before rolling it out to the rest of the
production machines. Minor releases usually contain bug fixes and
security updates, so I roll those out slightly faster, but I still test
it first.
