I believe you can get around this by downloading the zlib-1.2.3.tar.gz src file 
and compile and install with both ./configure, and ./configure -shared. (with 
make clean; make distclean in between of course ;)

This will build you libz.x.x.x.so files in /usr/local/lib - rerun ldconfig 
after, then try and rebuild clam.

(you may need to add /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf so ldconfig can see the 
new libz.so files - you can just leave your redhat rpms alone this way).

Disclaimer: "This may not be the best way to get around zlib "issues", but it's 
worked for me. ;)
