Andrea: Main.cvd and daily.cvd are DAT/signatures files. Main.cvd is updated less frequently that daily.cvd. Daily.cvd is updated several times a day.
About the difference between .cvd and .cld: When you do freshclam you will get .cvd files. They are compressed database files.
