Quoting Cliff Hayes <[email protected]>:

I am a system administrator who manages many servers and need a way to
programatically ping clamd on a server and get a response which I can
interpret to mean clamd is ok or the engine needs to be updated.

If you're willing to do the reverse, you can have the servers notify
you by running freshclam with the --on-outdated-execute option...

If there is no such thing, then is there a way to get clamd to email me when
the engine is outdated?

See above...

Depending on your monitoring setup, you might be able to remotely check it.
But if not, you can surely use the --on-outdated-execute option to email
you...

Thanks,

Cliff
