NOTE: this is a report and not a request for assistance. Problem solved
on my system already.
Mail got stuck (yes by design, when Clamav or Spamassin stop working I
do not want the mail sent) due to a failure of the Clamav databases. The
database directory contained only .cld files and freshclam showed I was
up-to-date on the databases. However clamd would not start with a
database error. The solution was the std delete all the db files and run
freshclam to download the databases again. This resolved the problem
after which I did the upgrade to 0.97.4 which is also working fine now.
