If that were the case, it would have asked you what to do. Debian
*ALWAYS* compares to be installed versions of configs vs currently on
the system configs.

If you didn't actually look at the changes (using "d" at the prompt put
you into a "diff" of the installed vs going to be installed) and just
let it put it in (using "y" without checking)... then that is your
culprit.

For me, I usually have it save the diff off, so I can manually merge it,
unless it is a major change to the package and the new version is
required for the "programs" to operate. I then shell in and copy the
existing config... and then merge back my changes to the new one.
