Can you confirm the machines that have normalized are not using
swap? If they moved into swap on an SSD system not designed for swap
use like Intel Optane with its large cache that could have caused
the failures. The swap partition might have destroyed the drive.

I just checked the machines that (not yet?) failed as well as the
failing systems
do /not/ show any unusual swap usage.
