The only "problem" I've had with it is on Windows XP systems where my
automated "upgrade" that uninstalls and reinstalls ClamAV fails because
ClamAV thinks it's "in use" and schedules a "remove on restart" which then
removes the new version instead of the old version.

That's really a problem with my own code since it doesn't consider that a
possibility.

ClamAV isn't an "online" scanner, so it's not checking files as you read and
write them unless you're using some other helper to do that. I use
Tech-Protect here, which is supposed to check files on write and offer at
least some protection against direct infection. In practice, it's better at
detection than prevention, but at least you know there's a problem.
