Hi Peter,

I would recommend you the book "Introduction to Statistical Learning" by
James et al.[1], which is a shorter and easier version of classical book
"Elements of Statistical Leaning" by Hastie et al.
The book has nice examples in R programming language which is also
described in sufficient detail. And finally, the book is free so you can
grab a copy from the authors
