Great, I think this is fine to check in. Thanks for doing this!
I suppose we still differ in opinion about permissions and access
control, but it isn't a sore spot for me -- we need the code!
i could not get logging happening so i kept the DEBUG statements.
I'll try to take a look at that. I suspect that there may be
something buggy/missing in our logging implementation, so the
SystemLogger stuff doesn't work properly.
