IIRC, they changed that in JDK6 to default to ON. Either way, I don't
see a reason to stricly follow this behaviour here.

Awesome. I've been testing against 1.5, but defaulting this on is great. Sun's
non-AA drawing is pretty ugly (much worse than cairo non-AA!).

anti-aliasing does cost us very much performance, but is visibly better.

Does it? Didn't you say the performance gain by turning off AA was
marginal? Or was that a typo?

Yes, that was a (bad) typo.  Should be "cairo's anti-aliasing does NOT cost us
very much performance".  In fact, basic AA drawing is significantly faster on
cairo than Sun, though Sun may have improved their AA in JDK6 if they make it
the default.
