[Sorry to post something which isn't entirely on topic, but I figure
people here will have a better idea of the best tools for working on
classpath than anyone anywhere else. It's probably best if replies are
kept to private mail, I think - but if anyone wants any replies I get
forwarded to them, just let me know.]

Up until recently I've been doing all my development on JDK1.2beta for
Win32. Recently I copied all my files onto my linux partition in order
to make it easier and more reliable to use CVS, and generally get the
chance to use a better operating system ;) Unfortunately, though, I
can't test my code on that system, because I don't have any JVM or
compiler on it...

So here's my question: What JVM and compiler are people using? I would
use Japhar, except I'm only on a 486 and I'd like my compiles to take
under an hour if possible ;) (I know it will get faster, so I hope this
remark doesn't cause anyone offense). Kaffe would be nice, except for
licensing issues which I'm not sure about, and I'm also not sure whether
it comes with a compiler (and due to the licensing, I wouldn't be able
to run Sun's javac on it, presumably) (even if Sun's java software *is*
pure java, which is probably too much to expect). How complete and
reliable is guavac? What about the latest blackdown port of jdk1.1.6,
and does classpath require features that aren't in 1.1.6 and aren't
provided by classpath itself?

As you can probably tell, I'm not too fussy about whether what I get is
free software - I am in favour of free software because I believe it
produces the *best* software, and so I have no problem with using
proprietary stuff until the free versions overtake :) (flames on this
paragraph are welcome if you feel *that* strongly, but please keep it to
private mail)

Stuart.
