sorry to join the discussion so late - been in work hell for the past few
weeks, and haven't had the energy to even think about java. :)

Japhar runs in-process.  Sun's implementation marshalls data to another
process - perhaps that's how they get around license problems, if there
are any in their case.. IMO, there are too many sticky points with running
another process (i18n text input issues with motif, for instance) that it
just doesn't make sense to go there.  In fact, I'll be really surprised
when I see the JDK working in this fashion.
