That is one klugy function, something I don't mind saying since I wrote it.
It might be better to replace the entire thing with a better version.
However, if you are going to start with that as a base, my suggestion is
not to hack it up for each specific protocol. Rather, if you somehow
want to put in protocol specific parsing, override the method.
