I noticed the following on http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/status.html:
"Some initial work gives support for loading of XBMs. All the image framework has been written, and if anyone is interested in writing Java decoders for PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, or any other image format, please contact the mailing list." I have a Java 1.1-compatible LGPL PNG decoder that I'd be willing to adapt as necessary, if it hasn't been done yet.
