No, we should not silently give the user a crippled AWT. Disabling it should be an active choice by the user if they really want it. I have seen the pain that silently disabling support (like java.math in kaffe) can give if you think you have a fully functional product but when you run some more tests it suddenly starts to mysteriously break down, just because configure couldn't find the installation dir of some needed library.
