there was some interest on building BeanShell from source on IRC. On Gentoo they made a build script (ebuild) that can do this. Maybe this gives you an inspiration for what to do on the commandline: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62664 (the last file entry is the working one).
Someone even committed some patches that adds optional GNU readline support for beanshell. Unfortunately they did not take it ...
