I am about halfway in completing in Clean wiki a walkthrough on installing Clean2.2 (from source) on (X)Ubuntu, together with modifying the make script:

Why don't you use the binary release of Clean for 64 bit linux:

http://clean.cs.ru.nl/download/Clean22/linux/Clean2.2_64.tar.gz

A source version is available for 32 bit linux:

http://clean.cs.ru.nl/download/Clean22/linux/Clean2.2_boot.tar.gz

There is currently no such version for 64 bit linux.

If you want to compile Clean from source code on 64 bit linux, look at
the Makefiles in this Clean2.2_boot.tar.gz, not in Clean2.2Sources.tgz.
