While linkids are more stable, exposing them introduces a new abstraction into the administrative model, which is something we'd like to avoid -- especially since numbers are an unfriendly (and unmemorable) way to identify something. We'd really like administators to be thinking about link "public0", not link 23. (Please note that I'm not trying to dismiss your question. It's just that I don't think linkids are the answer.) -- meem
