Hi Adrian, Project Clearwater should use AKA authentication when it is requested by a UE, and when you have an external HSS configured correctly with the user’s credentials. Project Clearwater’s subscriber store is useful for getting started, but it’s not a full HSS, and is not able to provide AKA authentication.
We have tested AKA authentication using SIPp (http://sipp.sourceforge.net/doc/reference.html#SIP+authentication). We have also used it successfully with a variety of IMS handsets, including VoLTE UEs. Note that Project Clearwater’s P-CSCF (bono) doesn’t itself support AKA and IPSec so this testing has been done with production SBCs such as Metaswitch’s Perimeta. I hope that helps.
