you can change the way the library displays by clicking on the wrench icon just above the library pane songs added to an existing playlist are added where ever the cursor is you can drag n drop songs/albums/artists/other in the order they are displayed in the library pane in any part of a playlist playlists will sort by whatever column header you click on, ascending or descending smart playlists also has many options for how playlists are initially displayed
