This issue corrected itself! I suspect it was something to do with GTK+ packages not present.
I was running Debian 8, but I had a lot of "jessie-backports" and other entries that were either (I concluded) no longer needed, or were giving me "you have held broken packages" error notifications in Synaptic I did a dist-upgrade to Debian 9 : now I am running <quote> Linux 4.9.0-5-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 (2018-01-04) i686 GNU/Linux </quote> And I checked and corrected my /etc/apt/sources.list I got rid of some repositories that were no longer needed. And the next time I opened Clementine, BAM!! The missing Play Control icons Prev, Play/Stop/Pause, Next visible, functional and located in their normal position.
