>I think it was Channel 43 at ten. I know I wasn't planning to stay up until

>My comment: So why did you choose to run the effigy stuff and not some shots

i think the thing is, you are looking at it from the standpoint that
the 'news' broadcast is about conveying information to its viewers.
>From that angle, your response is totally understandable. But despite
the misleading name, that is not what news broadcasts are about.
They are about selling viewers to advertisers. What they run is going
to be based on what is most likely to grab viewers and keep them
watching. (Not just my opinion; i was a broadcasting major and
this is what we were taught - altho they had to hem and haw around
it a little bit).
Pieing and kicking an effigy head around, however you might feel about it
politically, is Theater, and much more punchy than several hours of,
say, reading names off a list. (Please note i am NOT putting down the
Monument action - having the curator come out to read the names
at the end still brings tears to my eyes. I am just giving you the broadcasters
perspective).
This is exactly why someone giving a concise, well-thought out five
minute interview will be passed over for shots of anarchist youth
shouting slogans. Go for the punch, the viewability, the lowest common
denominator, what will stop the masses of couch potatoes from
picking up the remote and flicking over to some reality-TV crapola
or WWF. That is what matters to the folks with the mics and cameras.
