 Well, maybe I  should have waited another 2 or 3 days before
starting that build - the segfault turns out to be another
manifestation of PR26763 for which a patch is now in the book.

 I'll bin that build and start over (hmm, for once I can't even
resume from when I enter chroot, there might be other hidden
examples of this problem).  I urge anybody else using gcc-4.1.0
without that patch on *any* architecture to do the same.
