That is the error, I think - it looks like it can't find ldd.

You haven't said which architecture you are trying to build, and
you also imply that you have tried more than one version of glibc,
so I'll ask you now: which architecture, and have you intentionally
done anything differently from what the book says ? At the moment,
all I can see is that this isn't one of the multilib books (CC="gcc").
Is this a chroot or boot build ?
Have you made the symlinks for libgcc_s.so{,1} from /usr/lib, and
are they sensible (i.e. they both eventually lead to the library) ?
I'm guessing that something went wrong with a symlink.
