On my server, my docbook script used:

Python-2.4.2
libxml2-2.6.22
libxslt-1.1.15
(db-4.4.20 was already built)
subversion-1.3.1
tidy_src_050722 (hopefully, any version)
unzip552
docbook-xml-4.4
docbook-xsl-1.69.1

Most of these are now old, but hopefully the newer versions just
drop in. Waht you do need to do is include the compatability stuff
for older docbook versions. So, in blfs for docbook (xml) see the
part under Configuring DocBook XML DTD, specifically

  for DTDVERSION in 4.1.2 4.2 4.3 4.4
  do ...

Actually, docbook-xsl-1.69.1 was still current in blfs last tine I
checked, although it has a similar section on compatability or
BLFS-6.0.

If my pointing you to the DTDVERSION stuff in blfs didn't help,
which version(s) of docbook-xml and docbook-xsl are you using, and
whose instructions ?

Oh, wait - are you missing one of the docbook pair ? I can
remember building one but not the other, and wondering why I
couldn't render.
