I've tended to use "data" or some variation of (contact-data, supplier-data, etc.) in place of app/state, so I'm with you there. Interesting question about using cursor in the naming - my gut tells me no, that's an implementation detail, but if it makes the intent of the code more clear to you or your team, then go for it.
I agree about owner being confusing. I like the idea of using "self".
