I didn't realize cljx wasn't contrib, or what the implications of that are.

Right, cljx is an independent project (@ http://github.com/lynaghk/cljx). To further clarify, cljx is never going to be part of contrib (based on feedback I've received from members of the Clojure core team).

I am also quite keen on some variant of cljs-in-cljs, but the path to it cannot include cljx (presuming a desire to have the work in question be acceptable upstream).
